Anyone plan to breed pure lines in V4? I know one of the biggest challenges in keeping things pure is getting correct Lp patterns, so I thought we might make a little coalition and help each other keep things pure. Interest?

I plan on using only horses which are Appaloosas all the way down the line and Locals in my herd. I agree, it's a big challenge but I love making it just that little bit more interesting. I'm hoping for pure lined, Lp, Cow Sense Appies... not too much then!

Funny you should mention this I was actually thinking about whether or not I was going to crossbreed in the new version this morning. What I realized is that I had pretty much only crossbred in order to get NS blood into my lines... and in the new version there aren't going to be an NS. There will be the CoD mares however. Anyway what I think I will wind up doing is having two seperate bloodlines - One that is of all appaloosa heritage, and one that I crossbred CoD/other breed lines into. It could be interesting to see how they show against each other My goals for both lines would include proper patterning - that's been one of my main struggles on this version. Also on this version I've been trying to darken my rufus shades - breeding livers and the like; maybe on the next version one of my lines will be dark rufused and the other light rufused? I'm still planning it all out.. nothing's concrete

Violin, that's exactly what I was contemplating doing - having two separate lines like that. I would have the same goals for each one, only one would be pure Appy and the other will have crossbreeding. I'll just have to come up with a simple way of keeping track of who has what lines.

lol Ya'll stay outta my brain!
I have a third ranch that I wasn't sure WHAT I would be doing with. I kicked around the idea of breeding a seperate breed there, but I also gave thought to the idea of having it be another appy ranch where I'll allow cross breeding. The same things will be worked for, colors, patterns, and special traits, ect. Just one will be crossable the other not.

Hehe, great minds think alike! ;D And I came up with a decent way of keeping my herd apart - I'll keep "pure" Appys in Barn One, "crossbred" Appys in Barn Two, show horses in barn 3, and LS, rehomeables, etc. in the pasture. Ah, that makes me feel better now that I have a plan.

That's a really good idea What I may wind up doing is dedicate one ranch to pures and another to crosses, still deciding. Out of all the breeds I breed now, I only really want to continue Apps and Paints... and I have four accounts. That way there'd be absolutely NO confusion XD lol.

I have two blue ribbons, and I'm trying to decide what to do with them. I looked at the pedigrees of my current stock a couple of months ago and realized that I didn't have one purebred App, and most have barely any App lines at all. I want to keep pure lines, but in my experience crossbreeding really helps to get stats up, because you have the best of several breeds to choose from. I'm leaning towards having both of my ranches to specialize in Appaloosas, with one that keeps only pure lines and one that crossbreeds.

That's the beauty of clean starts. All the breeds are on even gounds making crossbreeding less of a temptation.
I think it'll be an intresting development to see how the crosses fare against the pures in the lines as they progress. Looking forward to this little experiment.

I too plan on breeding Appys with purebred lines and one crossbred line. I won the Draft Cod and the mare I have chosen will be a Liver Chestnut Leopard App mare. I can't wait. Since I cannot win another CoD for a year (unless things change with the coming of V-4) I will be concentrating on getting some nice color with correct patterns and concentrating on getting a strong pure Appy line going. I would def. be interested in working with other serious Appy breeders to make this happen! Look for my girl .SBD. Connecting The Spots on ranch 106 Spotted By Design Appaloosas to appear any day now!!
